The Georgetown University Research Resources Office, within the Office of Fellowships, Awards, and Research, operates as a central clearing house for information and advice on undergraduate research opportunities across the broad horizon of disciplines, both those opportunities available through Georgetown and those supported outside of the University.
What is undergraduate research?
As defined by the Council on Undergraduate Research, research is“[a]n inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate student that makes an original intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline.” The Research Resources Office at Georgetown University encourages undergraduate students to pursue research experiences individually, with a faculty mentor, and/or outside of the Georgetown community.
Why participate in undergraduate research?
Participating in a research experience will enhance your educational experience, further your knowledge of a topic that most interests you, and connect you with faculty mentors and the greater Georgetown community. In addition, your research can help prepare you for graduate school, the workplace, or strengthen your application for a competitive fellowship, award, or scholarship.
Can any student participate in undergraduate research?
Absolutely! Any student can participate in self-directed research. Undergraduate research isn’t limited to Juniors or Seniors, or restricted to a certain major. Many research experiences are available, and we encourage you to pursue your research interests.
Does the Office directly match me with a research position or project?
GOFAR’s Research Resources does not directly match students with a certain position or project. However, Research Resources provides undergraduate students with information needed to find a research experiences or mentors, in addition to advising the student on how to approach a potential faculty mentor.
How can the Office of Fellowships, Awards and Research help me?
The Research Resources Office is here to assist you in finding a research experience by providing you with a wealth of information, resources, and opportunities to aid you in taking the next step in pursuing self-directed, undergraduate research. It is our hope that students will use the resources provided by our Office to find a research experience. In the coming months, we also hope to provide you with an awareness of opportunities to publish, present, and share your work through journal publication, symposia, and conferences. Please contact Lauren Tuckley, Research Resource Coordinator, at gofar@georgetown.edu or les58@georgetown.edu for more information.
If you are ready to participate in a research experience begin by contacting either your academic advisor or faculty member in your area of interest. Additionally, you can also browse the opportunities listings on the Research Resources Office webpage; there you will find opportunities available both on-campus and externally. We highly recommend that you begin searching for your research experience as soon as possible. It is never too early, or too late, to get started.
