2005 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS:

Ben Cote (COL '05) George J. Mitchell Scholarship

Benjamin Cote, a political economy and math major from Scarborough, ME, is a John Carroll Fellow and active in the Program; he is currently a teaching assistant in the John Carroll Programs Research Class a first for this Program. Cote is a longstanding spokesman for the prevention of rape and violence education as well as a principle founder of GUMARR, GU Men Advocating Relationship Responsibility. Previously, Cote won a Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Scholarship. At the University of Ulster, he will study Peace and Conflict Studies.

2004 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS:

Iga Wegorzewska (COL '04) Churchill Scholarship

Iga, a Biology major and Psychology minor at Georgetown, was a Howard Hughes Undergraduate Scholar, a recipient of the Goldwater Scholarship, and a member of the Georgetown Chapter of the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. She has conducted research in a Neurobiology laboratory as well as in a Molecular Biophysics laboratory. While at Cambridge, Iga will work toward her MPhil in the Biological Sciences, investigating neurodegenerative disorders. She then hopes to enter a combined MD/PhD program to pursue biomedical research in an academic setting.

Kate Henningsen (COL '04) Joseph Allbritton Scholarship

Kate Henningsen is an honors History major hoping to eventually enter politics in her native state of Wisconsin. Kate has pursued her passion for politics through various work experiences at the office of Senator Russ Feingold, the Democratic National Committee and the United States Embassy in Madrid Spain. During her junior year, Kate founded Georgetown Women in Politics, which works to educate its 350 members about the barriers women continue to face when running for public office. As an undergraduate research fellow she has written on women?s historic role in the national parties and their current voting patterns in the 107th and 108th Senate.



2003 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS:

Lindsay Oishi (COL '03) Joseph Allbritton Scholarship

After winning the Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship as a junior, Lindsay went on to secure an Allbritton Scholarship which she is using to study for a second BA in Psychology, Philosophy & Physiology at Brasenose College, Oxford. She is interested in examining comparative educational methodology in England and Asia, particularly Japan and India, and hopes to relate her studies to a Ph.D. in Philosophy. She would like to become a teacher of Philosophy and an educational administrator back home in Hawaii.

Marc Gersen (SFS '04) Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship

Marc, a junior in SFS, was awarded the 2003 Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship. A native of Florida, Marc is also a Humane Studies Fellow, a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Economics, active with the Philodemic Debate Society, and a member of the Delta Phi Epsilon Foreign Service Fraternity. He plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Economics after graduating from Georgetown, and he ultimately hopes to become a professor of Economics. The Beinecke Scholarship includes $30,000 for graduate school plus $2,000 prior to entering graduate school.

J. Patrick Hornbeck II (COL '03) Healy Scholarship

Valedictorian of the 2003 College class, J.P. majored in Theology and Medieval Studies. He is especially interested in medieval and Reformation history, politics, theatre, opera, and contemporary ecclesiastical reform. He won the Healy Scholarship in 2003, along with the Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship. He is currently using both to further his studies at St. Cross College, Oxford, where he is pursuing a Master's Degree in Historical Theology.

Dorothy Fink (NHS '03) Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship

A Health Sciences and Biochemistry major, Dorothy was the only undergraduate ever to have made an oral presentation at the Midwest Organic Solid State Chemistry Symposium. Focused on serving the community through medicine, she is currently employing the Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship, which offers up to $50,000/year for up to six years, to complete her M.D. in Oncology and Hematology.

Carey Gaughan (COL '03) Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship

Carey earned his B.A. in English from Georgetown in 2003. His interests, including art history, music, travel, and culture, led him to apply for a M.A. in Art History at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. He hopes to also complete a J.D. and to ultimately become the general counsel for a museum or gallery.

J. Patrick Hornbeck II (COL '03) Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship

Valedictorian of the 2003 College class, J.P. majored in Theology and Medieval Studies. Flynn Coleman (SFS '03) Henry Luce Scholarship

Flynn studied Culture and Politics at Georgetown while earning a Justice and Peace Studies Certificate. The Luce Scholarship Program placed her in the Asian Human Rights Commission in Hong Kong where she works on a variety of issues involving human rights and rule of law in Asia, with frequent trips to Cambodia, where she works on legal reform. Upon her return to the U.S., she would like to pursue a J.D./M.A. in negotiation and conflict resolution.

Anthony P. House (COL '02) Rhodes Scholarship

A History major and English minor, Anthony was actively involved in GU Pride and Amnesty International at Georgetown University. After graduating Georgetown, Anthony spent a year in the Jesuity Volunteer Coprs. He is currently pursuing a DPhil in Modern History at Oxford University and remains strongly committed to issues relating to queer rights, urban economic development and the urban poor, and the social justice movements within the Catholic Church.



2002 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS:

Courtney Peterson (COL '02) British Marshall Scholarship

Courtney Peterson, a physics and biology major, was a Clare Boothe Luce, Barry M. Goldwater, and two-time Howard Hughes Scholar. She has conducted research in biology, physics, and astronomy and has been a co-author on several publications. For the past three years, Courtney has been heavily involved in the Journal of Young Investigators, Inc. (JYI: www.jyi.org) an international, student-run, non-profit organization that seeks to improve science literacy and to provide a variety of science training programs for undergraduate students.

Kateri DuBay (COL '02) Gates Cambridge Scholarship
Kateri, a Biochemistry major and Theology minor was a John Carroll Scholar. She was awarded a one-year fellowship for post-graduate study at the University of Cambridge through the Gates Cambridge Scholars Program. Kateri was one of 150 students selected worldwide and the first Georgetown University student to receive the honor. After a year at Cambridge, Kateri plans to enroll in a doctoral program in chemistry in the fall 2003.

Lindsay Oishi (COL '03) Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship

Lindsay, a junior in the College, was one of 20 winners of the 2002 Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarships. Lindsay is a native of Honolulu, Hawaii. She is majoring in Philosophy and Japanese with minors in Cognitive Science and History. Upon graduation, Lindsay plans to attend graduate school and study philosophy or enroll in a joint J.D./Ph.D. program. The award includes $30,000 for graduate school plus $2,000 prior to entering graduate school.

Nathaniel Hansen (COL '00) Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Studies

Nathaniel, a Philosophy major and Art History minor in the College, graduated in May 2000. As a John Carroll Scholar, Nat served as co-Chair of the John Carroll Committee for Improvement of the Intellectual Life Speech Series. Nathaniel was awarded the Allbritton Scholarship and is completing a B.A. at Brasenose College. He plans to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago.

Lori Khatchadourian (COL '97) Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Studies

Lori, a Classics and Government major in the College, graduated in May 1997. Lori spent the spring semester of her junior year studying at the American University of Armenia. Lori will use her Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities to pursue a Ph.D. in Art History.

Christopher Griffin (SFS '02) Joseph Allbritton Scholarship

Christopher Griffin, a major in International Political Economy in the School of Foreign Service, was a John Carroll Scholar. Chris was the first student selected as the John Carroll Program Chair and was responsible for spearheading a number of academic programs. Chris was awarded the Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship as a Junior in 2001. Chris is in his second year at Brasenose College, Oxford, where he is completing the MPhil in Economics.

Elizabeth Hutcheon (COL '02) Healy Scholarship

Elizabeth, an English major with concentration in Classical Languages in the College, studied at Trinity College in Dublin during her junior year. Theater has been one of her interests and during the 2001-2002 academic year, she produced a major theatrical production Death and the Maiden. Elizabeth will pursue studies in literature at St. Cross College, Oxford.

Ben Cote (COL '05) Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship

Ben is currently a third-year Mathematics and Political Economy major. He is active on the Georgetown campus as a research assistant and as a spokesman for rape and violence education and prevention. He hopes to pursue a Ph.D. in Economics after graduation, teach, and begin a career in politics.

Dariush Afshar (MSB '01) George J. Mitchell Scholarship

Arsalan Suleman (SFS '03) George J. Mitchell Scholarship

With a major in International Politics, a concentration in Security Studies, and a certificate in Islam and Muslim-Christian Understanding, Arsalan graduated magna cum laude from the SFS in 2003. After winning the Mitchell Scholarship, Arsalan enrolled in Trinity College, Dublin, where he is currently completing his year while reading for a MPhil in International Peace Studies. Hoping to enter law school upon his return, Arsalan intends to combine a study of International Law with his International Politics and Peace Studies background.
