Daniel Yew Mao Lim

Daniel was born and raised in Singapore, and attended high school at Raffles Junior College. He served in the Singapore Armed Forces for two years prior to enrolling at Georgetown. He is currently a second-year graduate student in the MSFS degree program at Georgetown's School of Foreign Service (SFS), where he focuses on International Relations and Security. He is concurrently pursuing his undergraduate degree in International Political Economy as a senior at the SFS.
Daniel's research focuses on the political economy of international organizations and development economics. He recently co-authored a paper with SFS Professor James Vreeland titled "Regional Organizations and International Politics: Trading Asian Development Bank Loans for United Nations Security Council Votes." The paper presents evidence that Japan leverages its influence at the Asian Development Bank to facilitate favorable project loans for the UN Security Council's elected members in exchange for the favorable votes. The authors hope to present their paper at the upcoming 4th Political Economy of International Organizations Conference held in Zurich next January, and will be submitting their paper to academic journals shortly.
Daniel participates in the weekly Georgetown University International Theory and Research Seminar, and is also an active member of the Georgetown Government Department’s Quantitative Models Working Group. He is currently co-authoring a paper with SFS Professor Charles Udomsaph on whether exporting increases firm productivity under the Georgetown Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (GUROP).
Last semester, Daniel worked as a short-term consultant for the World Bank's Private and Financial Sector Development Division, where he assisted two economists with the publication of a book on technological innovation and absorption in Europe and Central Asia. He was formerly co-Editor-in-Chief of the 7th Carroll Round Proceedings, a member of the 8th and 9th Carroll Round Organizing Committees, a Managing Editor (Law & Ethics, Business & Economics) at the Georgetown Journal of International Affairs, a teaching assistant for Dean Mitch Kaneda's International Trade course, and a peer mentor for Dean Emeritus Peter Krogh's freshman proseminar.
Daniel will return to work in the Singaporean government after graduation.
