Angela Crandall
Ms. Crandall was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. She is a senior in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service majoring in Science, Technology & International Affairs (STIA) with a concentration in Energy/Environment and a certificate in International Development. In 2008, Angela’s debut jazz vocal CD “Shine,” won the Hawaii People’s Choice award for Jazz and more recently, she was nominated for the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano music award.
Angela’s guiding academic interest is in the interface between environmental conservation and sustainable economic development. She first became interested in environmental work after being accepted into a seven-week internship program in Hawaii working with different environmental agencies. International experiences including home-stay/study-abroad in Japan, Costa Rica, and Tanzania have instilled an international focus in Angela’s studies. Angela most recently returned from two months in East Africa where she conducted stakeholder interviews regarding global change effects on water levels and the wetland fringe of Lake Victoria. Utilizing this summer research, Angela is in the process of writing a senior honors thesis.
Angela has experience working for the University of Hawaii’s Department of Oceanography, Environmental Law Institute, and US State Department’s East Asian Department. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in natural resource policy to create partnerships amongst local governments, federal agencies, and other community stakeholders. She dreams of ultimately working on international water issues at the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and cares about strengthening institutions as a means to alleviate both environmental stress on local populations and alternately, human pressure on the natural world.
Angela’s arsenal of Japanese, Spanish, and Swahili languages will help her to interact and learn from people around the globe. In her spare time, Angela leads Georgetown Outdoor Education rock climbing, backpacking, and horseback riding trips, organizes the annual Luau as Georgetown’s Hawaii Club President, and sings with the GU jazz band. She also practices Power Vinyasa yoga, surfs, and experiments with cooking new food dishes.
