Jack Carlson, Lisa J. Raines Fellow

J CarlsonJack is a junior in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, majoring in Regional & Comparative Studies (East Asia and Europe) with a minor concentration in Classical Archaeology. He is proficient in Latin and is studying Mandarin Chinese and French. He is a 2007 Peter F. Krogh Scholar, a 2007 Lisa J. Raines Fellow, and a John Carroll Fellow. Outside of the classroom, he is a teaching assistant in Economics, and is a member of the men’s varsity heavyweight rowing team.

As a John Carroll Fellow, Jack was able to apply for a Lisa J. Raines summer research fellowship to study one of his great interests, archaeology. With the grant from this fellowship, Jack undertook research on Etruscan pottery at Poggio Colla, the site of an Etruscan sanctuary and settlement about twenty miles north of Florence, Italy. At the site, now being excavated under the auspices of the Mugello Valley Archaeological Project, Jack participated in research in the laboratory as well as physical excavation, and he was also able to visit other Etruscan sites around Italy. His research culminated in a paper on bucchero plates in northern Etruria. Jack would like to pursue similar study, in archaeology or ancient history, in graduate school.
